3G is a bigger battery hog. Unless you plan to use a data connection for heavy duty surfing, it's really not necessary to keep it going all the time. You've probably seen the lengthy thread on HP forums about this issue.

You can turn off the 3G connection by tapping Start > Settings > Personal tab > Phone icon > Band Switch tab > select GSM only
