I looked at this and using their spreadsheet calculator for what I wanted I would have saved some money with the CD. But this was based on paying the full price for the software I wanted and if you keep an eye on the forums here you will find frequent promotions, sales and discount codes from both software companies and web stores. If you are prepared to be patient then I think you can get most of the software you need for less than full list price which could make the CD savings less attractive.
