I asked a transit authority person this last month and his answer was that he saw 10,000 of these go through the machine each day and there haven't been any complaints so far. I believe the reason they tell you not to put them through the machines in some planes is because bomb circuitry could easily look like computer circuitry and its just easier to show its a computer by turning it on.
