I have had a similar message, and after taking extensive notes in a college class that can be really frustrating. What I found out is that you can actually go into settings and stop various other programs that may be running to make it so you have enough memory to save the file (I thought this was kinda odd). Another thing I did was paste my notes into an excel document and save it there and then close/not save my word document. Open a new document and paste the stuff from the spreadsheet into the new word doc and it worked.
I know that if you select to not save the information, it will be most certainly lost.
