And now I have found a solution...

I've uninstalled AS 3.8 (yet again!!!), deleted c:\program files\microsoft\activesync then reinstalled 3.8. Now it works a treat! No problems with exploring.
Now, whilst experimenting, I had deleted the windows\activesync folder on my Axim so I don't know if this needed to be done to make it work. I'd suggest leaving it in place and just nuking the folder on the PC. If that doesn't work, nuke the folder on the Axim too. I'm not going to test this - "If it's fixed, don't bust it", to coin a phrase.
