After the hard reset, did the buttons work with the standard PIM applications? If yes, then it appears to be a bad install of the 3rd party app.
If the buttons didn't work properly after the hard reset, then your flash may be corrupted and you would be wise to re-flash the OS back into the unit.
Of course, it it's still under warranty, you have another choice as well.
Note that if the flash has developed a bad area, re-flashing the OS will 'fix' that. That is because the flash controller will remap the bad area with a good spare block.
