I am connected up for wireless with WPA-PSK encryption although I suspect the earliest rom versions only supported wep etc. so point 1) is a must...i think.

Well I hope I am imparting some of the excellent guidance provided buy this forum. I will continue to update this string to give a perspective of someone just starting off (in absence of the road map link).
K back to my questions - what memory and flash memory should I purchase and roughly what size ?

Looks like you're off to a good start and headed in the right direction. As for memory, your X50v accepts both SD (secure digital) and CF (Compact Flash). I would get the biggest capacity you are willing to spend money on at the moment. The largest capacity in the market for SD and CF cards are 4GB and 8GB, respectively.
