Best Pocket PC Freeware
I initially started putting this list together for myself to take advantage of the vast amounts of freeware for the pocket pc platform. While there are commercial software that are more refined and can do more than a lot of the freeware out there, there is still plenty of good free software programs for those that do not want to spend more on software or are just not ready to commit to commercial software. There are some pretty good freeware sites which I have listed in MyPDA, including pocketpcfreeware.com and freewareppc.com, I have based this list on ratings provided on the pocketpcfreeware.com website. I've included programs released or posted to pocketpcfreeware.com over the past two years and have been rated 7 or better on a scale of 10. I'm sure that there are freeware programs out there that were released prior to 2005 that still work on the latest OS, but since I have a X51v, I've concentrated on this time period. However, despite that some of these programs might have been developed recently, there is no guarantee that they will work with WM5.0. It might be a good idea to cross check with the Windows Mobile 5.0 software compatibility thread here on aximsite.com. In certain select cases, I've included programs that have a lower than 7 rating or were developed before 2005 because they are unique in what they do and have received positive comments from users. This is not to say these ratings are definitive and are not subjective, but I have used this as a guide for myself and this list. I'm sure there are plenty of very good/excellent freeware out there that may not be on this list. The list below is not meant to be an exhaustive freeware list nor the definitive freeware list but more of a good starting point for the significant amount of freeware available. Other threads on aximsite such as Favorite Freebies or The Official Free Games List threads are good reference points as well. Most of the links are directly to the developers' site so that you can always click on the link for the latest version as some of the freeware sites do not always have the latest versions. I hope some of you find this list helpful as it took a little time to put together. I have tried some but not all of the programs listed. I would have posted this earlier but thought it would be good post for my 500th post.

Calculators
8 Calc98 v5.3 - Calc98 is a non-programmable calculator for the PocketPC which allows you to choose either algebraic or RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) entry. It supports a variety of calculations (scientific, financial, statistical). Registration is required after 90 days but is free. This is an older program but remains popular. Added 2/26/07
8 MSS Converter v1.06 - MSS Converter allows to you make conversions between many units. Supported units are currencies (with the ability to automatically update rates when connected via Activesync), lengths, areas, volumes, masses, speeds, temperatures, pressures, times, angles, energies and powers. The software supports VGA and QVGA resolutions, with portrait, landscape or square screens. Updated 8/6/08 to v1.06
7 MyPocketCalc v1.3.00 - MyPocketCalc is a free Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) scientific calculator designed for Pocket PC running Windows Mobile (supports VGA)
7 RPN Calculator v3.01 - A RPN Calculator which was formerly commercialware. Supports WM2003, WM2003SE and WM5
7 CurrencyConv v0.7.4 - CurrencyConv is an application for you to check out the currency rates and convert a sum from one currency to another. Updated 2/3/08 v0.7.4

Clocks
8 SP TimeSync v2.3 - SP TimeSync is a program with multilingual interface which lets you synchronize your computer's clock with any Internet atomic clock (time server) via the NTP protocol (Network Time Protocol)
8 Pocket WakeUp v1.1 - Pocket WakeUp is a program that replaces the alarm system, not notifications, on your PPC. The program can handle up to 10 different alarms, nameable, each with different rules. Download the program here. 7 Time Zone v1.2.3 - This program is for people who need to co-ordinate their time in the current location city and the other – target – city. Being a plug-in to Calendar program, Time Zone changes appointment start time so that in current city it corresponds to the time of appointment in its "target" city, which will be selected by user. 7 AlarmClock v0.04 - AlarmClock is an improved version of GSAlarmClock created by Mr. Y.Nagamidori. It features improved features such as allowing you to personalize the application by setting parameters (number of repetitions, snooze, screen shutdown,e tc).

9 ThemeGenCE v2.5 - ThemeGenCE let you personalize appearance of the Today and Start pages on your Pocket PC. Updated 11/5/07 to v2.5
7 My Mobiler v1.23 - My Mobiler enables you to view your mobile screen on your desktop, control your mobile by using desktop keyboard and mouse, copy/paste text between mobile and desktop, capture mobile screen and drag and drop files to your mobile. Updated 5/10/08 to v1.23
7 MSCEInf v2.4 - MSCEInf is a utility to find and analyse all the data contained in installation CAB files. Updated 9/3/08 to v2.4
7 CABviaActiveSync - v1.4 - CABviaActiveSync is a utility which turns any installation of a CAB file much quicker. It appears as a new entry in the context menu of your desktop explorer. When you click this option, CABviaActiveSync executes several tasks: 1) it copies the CAB file to your ActiveSync directory and 2)it begins the install launching CEAPPMGR.EXE New-Added 11/19/06
7 Microsoft Device Emulator v3.0 - Standalone Release - The Microsoft Device Emulator This is the v3 release of the Device Emulator, that released with Visual Studio 2008. V3 updates the V2 emulator that released with Windows Mobile 6. Device Emulator 3.0 will replace the executables and DLLs from previous releases (1.0 and 2.0). The main addition with Device Emulator 3.0 is the new automation API for the device emulator manager, which allows developers programmatic access to perform the same operations on installed emulator images that can be performed interactively on the Device Emulator Manager drop-down and context menus. 7 Photos2Resize (former Photo2PocketPC) v2.0.1 - Photo2PocketPC resizes your photos to the display format of your PDA and transfers them to a storage card.
7 PocketDivXEncoder v0.3.60 - PocketDivXEncoder is a Windows desktop program to re-encode video files in the DivX format in order to optimize them for viewing on the PocketPC. You can create .AVI files either from .VOB files directly from DVDs or from .avi files formated for larger displays.
7 Mobile Registry Editor v1.1 - Mobile Registry Editor is an application that runs under Windows XP/2000 that lets you edit your Pocket PC or Smartphone's Registry via ActiveSync.
7 Sunrise v0.42j - Sunrise converts websites and newsfeeds for offline reading on your handheld
7 MobSync v0.9.4 - MobSync synchronizes any file folder on the desktop with any file folder on the Pocket PC
6 ActiveSync Toggle v1.0.4.0 - ActiveSync Toggle allows you to either load or unload ActiveSync from memory whilst also removing the registry key that automatically loads it upon starting Windows. The major change in version 1.0.4.0 is the ability to disable ActiveSync even when a PDA is connected

Emulation
8 ScummVM (fka PocketSCUMM) v0.11.1 - ScummVM is an emulator program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games from LucasArts from the 1990's. See Menneisyys' tutorial on playing classic LucasArts adventure games under ScummVM here Updated 3/10/08 to v0.11.1
8 CastCE v1.2 - CastCE is a fully functional Atari ST emulator for the PocketPC

6 DOSBox PPC v0.63 - A port of DOSBox for the Pocket PC. Designed to work on PocketPC running Windows Mobile 2003, 2003SE with screen resolution at 320x240. While this program only has a '6' rating, I've added it to the list due to its uniqueness in what it does.
NR pDOSBox - v1.1 - pDOSBox is a PocketPC port of the infamous DOSBox DOS-emulator. Like DOSBox, pDOSBox emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, DOS-like directory filesystem/XMS/EMS, mouse/joystick and EGA/VGA/VESA graphics system. The DOS o/s being emulated is rather rudimentary, but good enough to launch your favorite DOS applications, and even batch-file-driven DOS applications. Unlike DOSBox, sound system emulation (SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card) is not available in pDOSBox. This program is not rated, but I added it to the list due to its uniqueness. 7 X-MAS Runner LITE - v1.20 - A lite freeware version of X-Mas Runner Pro. You and the bounty hunter join forces to collect all the treasures, candies and gifts while eluding (or preferably destroying) evil guards who are trained to kill. Not exactly a new game, but I thought I would add it for the holiday season. New-Added 12/14/06
NR Death Drive v1.0 - Death Drive is a freeware Carmegeddon clone. This game looks great graphically for a freeware and can be downloaded directly here. You can check out Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen's review to read more about the game. New-Added 11/22/06
NR Xplodus v1.0 - Xplodus is a fun & addicting Bomberman clone for the PPC. This game from the same developers as Plumber Pete was a finalist in Smartphone & PocketPC Best Software Awards in 2007 for Bomberman clone games. - New-Added 5/30/08

8 Nine Hole Golf v1.0 - Nine Hole Golf, a challenging 3D game, perfect for playing wherever you are. Choose from six animated characters and three luxurious courses, each with a distinct climate and landscape. New-Added 2/2/07
8 CEBoard v2.1 - CEBoard is a chess tool for Pocket PC, it is NOT a chess game
8 Freecell v1.2 - FreeCell for Pocket PC is one of the most advanced versions of FreeCell available. Version 1.1 and later supports WM5 and VGA. Version 1.2 adds Next Game command and makes the Undo feature easier in WM5 Updated 5/30/08 to v1.2.
8 Pac-Man v1.0 - The ORIGINAL 1980 Namco arcade version; simply redone for the Pocket PC
7 SuperDoku v1.1 - SuperDoku is a complete Sudoku game : it offers a nice interface but can also generate grids with 8 levels from beginner to hardest. You can only access a new level after you complete the previous one. New-Added 2/3/07

7 Pocket Griddler v1.7.2 - Pocket Griddler is a brainteaser of Japanese origin, known by the name Nonogram (and sometimes Picture Logic or Paint-By-Number)

7 Chess - v2.0 - This is the only true freeware chess game that I have found. There are 3 ways to play this game: against your PocketPc, on the web against another computer, or on the web against an online player. There is also a version with VGA support on the website.
6 ChineseChess or Xiangqi v1.0 - This game could be better but its the only freeware Chinese Chess game that I know of. I find that the AI is a bit tough and this program could benefit with the addition of different skill levels.
Misc
7 Exit Nights - v1.16 - Exit Nights is a card game similar to "Magic" in that you have to fight opponents and gather cards in order to assemble your deck and fight the boss at the end. Everything happens in the "Exit" nightclub, a place where you had to go in the "Fade" game, one of the best adventure game on Pocket PC. This game was formerly commercialware and is now freeware. New-Added 8/15/06
7 Leo's flight simulator v1.0 - Free flight simulator for PPC
Puzzle
8 PPcAtaxx v1.0 - Ataxx is a cross between Checkers (the moves) and Reversi (capturing) played on a square, 7x7 board.
7 Magic Bubble v1.0 - This free game combines Tetris and Columns for a good action/reflexion game. You must align bubbles to make combination and make new highscores. As soon as at least 3 bubbles ot same color are connected, all the other color connected bubbles disappear. New-Added 12/9/07
7 BSudoku v1.4 - Sudoku for your PPC Updated 1/27/07 to v1.4
6 PDASudoku v3.01 - PDASudoku is a fairly basic version of the famous Japanese brainteaser that provides more than 140 puzzles Updated 9/29/06 to v3.01

7 SrabblCE - v1.0.315.1 - SrabblCE is a good version of Scrabble, but not the version you play with your family or friends, but rather Scrabble Duplicate. This is an older game released in December 2004, but due to its uniqueness, I've added it to this list. Added 8/5/06
7 Sonart v2.3 - In the class of games inspired by MasterMind, this is a new program by Jean-François Mainguet. You have to find the colours in a grid (up to 8x8) with the aid of clues that you are given in the vertical and horizontal. A green circle or a red cross informs you permanently of the state of the column or row in question. New-Added 10/1/06
6 Crosswords (Xwords) v4.1.1 - Crosswords (or xwords, to use its Sourceforge project name) is an open source implementation of the rules of Scrabble™ for handhelds. Although this only has a 6/10 rating, the rating was based on a Beta version a couple of years ago. I've added this program to this list due to its uniqueness and most of it its free! Updated 11/15/06 to v4.1.1
NR Pocket UFO v1.26 - The Pocket UFO is a remake of the popular game of the last century X-COM Enemy Unknown (UFO Defense) for the Pocket PC devices. The game is a turn-based strategy with the RPG elements. Although this game program is not rated, I've added this program to this list due to the number of positive reviews from users at freewareppc Updated 7/10/07 to v1.26

7 CheckPOInt v6.0/CheckPOInt v5.2.1 - A software intended for use in combination with TomTom Navigator to give you an audible warning when you approach a point-of-interest or POI. 7 GPS2Blue v1.9 - This GPS-PDA utility has several features. It transforms your GPS enabled Pocket PC into an external bluetooth GPS receiver, allowing you to use it with your laptop PC or any other device which can use a Bluetooth GPS. It can also log to a file the data received from the GPS. Another feature is the PDA clock adjustment based on the precise GPS satellites clock. 7 NoniGPSPlot - v2.73d - NoniGPSPlot allows you to locate your position in relation to other GPS points and to see the journey you have made. It may be used to find your starting place in a port after sailing, or the place where you start a walking or biking excursion, or even your car in a parking. Any place long as you know its GPS coordinates. The traces and the points save are exportable with the GoogleEarth format. The website is in French, but should be relatively easy to see where to download the file. Updated 8/6/08 to v2.73d
7 GPSAuto - v1.0 - GPSAuto is a PocketPC application for monitoring your current speed and alerting when crossing speed limits. You can use GPSAuto in your automobile (car) for accurate measuring (based on GPS system) of actual speed and getting warning when crossing speed limit (speed limits as well as many other parameters are fully configurable). Unlike it's competitors, GPSAuto offers also automated switching of speed limits based on your actual speed. New-Added 10/18/06
7 3d tracking - v1.03 - 3d tracking is a revolutionary way to use the Internet to either monitor the movements of a live vehicle/person or to display a previous route that's been travelled. The vehicle/person's path is displayed as a line on either Google Earth or Google Maps with details of the speed at each point along the route. This allows you to follow the progress of a live vehicle, watching the points appear on the map as the vehicle moves. Alternatively you can view the previously recorded path that a vehicle or person moved along. Updated 8/3/07 to v 1.03

7 Mobile Pencil v2.22 - Drawing program which allows you to draw with different pen types or textures and save your work as BMP file.
7 PocketPicture v2.2 - PocketPicture allows you to turn your pocket PC into canvas and easel and be creative everywhere. It is useful to draw small icons as well as painting or editing rather big images (scrolling and zooming is supported). New-Added 2/2/07

Internet
NR Avantgo v6.2.52 Beta - Not rated, but the latest Beta supports VGA and has made it very useable on my X51V again and thus I recommend it.
8 PeekPocket v1.6 - PeekPocket is a new Wifi sniffer which does not require installation as you just copy the program into your PPC by unzipping it on the PDA and then running the program. Just remember to turn WLAN on. Updated 5/27/08 to v1.6
8 nPOP v1.0.9 - This software allows you to access e-mail on a POP3 mail server on your Pocket PC or PC Updated 11/28/06 to v1.0.9
7 Yahoo! Go - v20060817a - With Yahoo! Go, your stuff is always with you and easy to use. Contacts saved to your phone are also saved to your Yahoo! Address Book, Pictures you take with your phone are automatically saved to your Yahoo! Photos account, Record voice instant messages, Get notified when new email arrives. New-Added 10/12/06

7 Opera Mini v4.1.11320 - Opera Mini is a free web browser intended for the mobile phone market and requires a midlet manager installed on your device. Thanks to akheron's post, you can download WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment 6.1 from IBM, which offers a Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) runtime for the Pocket PC. Check out Menneisyys' review of this Java/Midlet environment. Opera Mini 4 delivers several new features for quicker scrolling, navigation and page rendering. This newest release also includes optimized features for BlackBerry devices, Landscape Mode (so — if you prefer to — you can now view your content sideways) and the ability to sync your Bookmarks and Speed Dial with those on your Computer. 6 Opera 8.5 beta 2 for Windows Mobile, Pocket PC. - An alternative to PIE, this is a browser for the PPC. Note: The current beta 2 expires June 1, 2006. Opera has released version 8.60 for Windows Mobile which costs $24 but you can still try it for 30 days.
6 +StartPage 2 v2.2 - +StartPage turns the launch screen of Pocket Internet Explorer into one of the most useful tools on the Pocket PC. Once you run PIE (or NetFront) will find a screen where the best Pocket PC enthusiast sites are represented. On the top right of the screen will find a quick navigation bar, from there will be able to quick jump to other screens that''ll let you check your webmail, navigate to the best Pocket PC sites, browse through eStores, or even quickly search the web on google. Although this program only received a 6 rating from pocketpcfreewares.com, Pocket PC Magazine has listed +StartPage as one of its Hot Downloads and nominated it for its Best Software awards in 2005.
5 Minimo - v0.2 - Minimo is an open source Internet navigator for Windows Mobile, based on the Mozilla code. Minimo v0.2 is for users of WM5.0 or higher. Users of previous versions of Windows Mobile should continue to use v0.016. Updated 3/30/07 to v0.2
5 Webby Mobile v2.6 - Webby Mobile 2.6 is a Internet Explorer Mobile or Pocket Internet Explorer add-on to allow for tabbed (multi-page) browsing, faster page rendering, a "Quick Link" builder that helps stylus users quickly enter web addresses, an RSS feed management/subscription reader, and full screen viewing (useful under pre-Windows Mobile 5 operating systems). Besides tabbed browsing Webby automatically provides the ability to scale web pages using internet microbrowsers servers. Webby Mobile requires Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework 2.0 which is available free here. While Webby Mobile 2.6 only has a 5 rating from pocketpcfreeware.com, it has improved over prior versions and users have had mostly positive experience with it. Also, its one of the few freeware alternatives to the built in Internet Explorer Mobile or Pocket Explorer for pocket pcs. NR Mobile Football - Worldcup Standard Edition v1.0.x - Similar to Mobile Football listed above, Mobile Football Worldcup lets you keep up to date with the results of the 2006 Worldcup.
7 HandWallet Basic v4.12 - HandWallet is a personal financial management program. The basic freeware version lets you track up to 3 Bank accounts, Credit Cards or Cash. You can also Track income, expenses, loans and savings. Updated 5/21/07 to v4.12
7 Booklib v1.28 - Booklib is a program which you can use to track and organize all your books on the Pocket PC. Classification and searching can be done by title, author, series or location
7 eReaderPro v3.03 (replaces eReader (ex-Palm Reader) v2.6.5) - e-book reader for the Pocket PC (formerly known as Palm Reader or Peanut Press Reader). Updated 5/15/08 to v3.03

7 Notification Clear Fix v1.2 - This application fixes a bug in WM2003 devices regarding Notification events and will install in your device's startup folder, and will be executed after every soft-reset of your device.
7 OzVGA - v0.53 - OzVGA is a freeware Advanced VGA mode switcher for PocketPC (WM2003SE). Just like SE_VGA, it lets you go from standard VGA mode to Full VGA (or HiDPI), and back again. Doing this requires a soft-reset. The difference with this program and SE_VGA lies is that OzVGA will modify Registry keys for you. In particular, the font size.
6 .NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP2 - The Microsoft® .NET Compact Framework 2.0 Redistributable contains the common language runtime and class libraries built for the .NET Compact Framework. In addition to supporting version 2.0, it also supports applications developed for version 1.0 and service pack releases before version 2.0. Thanks to Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen's relocation tutorial, you can easily move this to a storage card and save up to 5.4MB of internal memory space. Updated 3/14/07 to .NET CF 2.0 SP2
6 Force High Resolution v1.65 - Many applications display poorly on Pocket PC VGA as they don't support VGA mode, but use "double pixelisation". There's a work-around for this problem without having to go to "Full VGA" (as SE_VGA and OzVGA do). But this requires adding a little file next to each specific executable.
ForceHiRes has the same effect, without having to add the famous file time and again (10k each time), all done from a System Control Panel (with a simple .cpl file placed in \Windows). You only need to add to the list the executable that you want to force to hi-res mode: simple, quick & effective. Note: if you don't use File Dialog Changer, you will need to download the gsGetFile.dll from the author's website and copy it to the \Windows directory on your PocketPC.
