Did it completely stop do did it say it was restarting? Many people have reported the Axim appears to restart several times during transfer of large files (although I'm surprised you say it happens with any sized file), but they do eventually complete the copying if you just let it go.
If you are putting them on a memory card, the better way for large files or large numbers of files is to use a card reader. They are pretty inexpensive and much faster than ActiveSync over the cable or cradle.
