File compression wouldn't help much. Compression ratio would be close to 1:1 for Divx, and you would have to decompress anyway to view the file. Check your formatting: FAT32 allows a little bit more to be stored, but FAT16 is a great deal faster.
And use a card reader. They can be had for under $10 if you look around a little. They are so much faster than ActiveSync.
