Maybe I missed some info here, but I don't see the logical leap between slowness with a new operating system and hardware failure. If the fault is in the hardware, why does the slowness not appear on PPC2k2 (and maybe even the fabled 14000 build, if it really exists?)
If anything, the most reasonable culprit would be the file system driver, according to the benchmarks we're seeing.
