While I prefer not to get my news from the online equivalent of the National Enquirer, and a news source that's right up there with NewsMax and the Drudge Report in terms of journalistic standards, I'll check it out.
After reading both articles on The Register, I see no indication that the failure is a hardware one. Perhaps you would care to point out the parts that seem to indicate that the problem is a failure of hardware?
