I keep seeing the USB sync cables with car cigarette adapter. Are there any of those that will let me sync (not charge) connected to the PC and charge AND use while connected to the car via the USB plug? Can the car supply the extra power needed through USB or it it a limitation of USB rather than the power source?
Heres what I would do if I were you. Get the Dell travel sync cable. This will let you sync to your laptop and will charge the axim if it is off.

For the car I happen to use this Car Adapter although I got mine with a GPS unit. You can use this with the adapter that came in the Axim box or use it with the Dell travel cable. I can use this adapter to power and charge my axim and GPS unit all at once.

A lot of people have been able to use the Pelican PSP car charger. I have read a few reports that they could not get it to work but most have been positive. This would be cheaper and they are very easy to find.

USB ports on computers are limited to 500mA but the cables and power adapters that just happen to use the port do not have this limit. I don't like the car cig adapters because most of them are not high current although a few are. Make sure if you get one that it can supply at least 1A of current if no current spec is listed do not purchase it. Although a cable that syncs but does not charge while connected to a computer cannot then use a car adapter to charge while the unit is on so they are useless in my view anyways.
