Sync Center and Windows Mobile Device Center are NOT the same. When Windows Mobile Device Center detects your Axim it sets up a relationship in the Sync Center. You can't make a relationship in the Sync Center.
But, to do any of this you need to install the Vista Mobile Device Center update which is amongst the optional updates and only shows up when you search the new Vista Windows update. It isn't enough just to open it, as it will tell you there are no updates (critical) available.
What do I think of Mobile Device Center? It is in many, many ways a vast improvement vis a vis the amatuerish ActiveSync. Many good features and a very good design.
However, it now require a password everytime it detects a device and it detects the cradle as an unknown device it continually wants to have you install and search for a driver and when it does detect your Axim this is also an unknown device in the device manager listing entitled Portable devices (USB keys also are listed there).
Also, while activeStnc was sync crazy and was connecting all the time, this version only syncs - manually initiated - once and waits for you to initiate it again. No apparent way to schedule syncs.
So, it still needs a lot of work.
