Here's an observation that may prove irrelevant, but what the heck -- most of the posts I'm reading on this seem to point to a nothing-to-lose scenario. (By the way, all 5 of my CF and SD cards work, although my 256 CF is a Simpletech):
On all of my cards, both SD (2 SanDisk 128s) and CF (2 SanDisk 64s and 1 SimpleTech 256), there is one file in common. It is a zero-byte file named "ignore_my_docs" (note that there is no filename extension).
I'm not planning on testing this theory on a working card, but someone with a non-working card and a reader, or someone with a card that keeps "disappearing" files, but that can be seen on the PC desktop, might want to try creating 0-byte file (right click on your PC desktop and select new text document; then rename it) and copying it to the card to see what happens.
