Sounds like you got it right with the my isp method. You have to manually seclect the connection like you are. I don't know if some other software would make it automatic.
Your right about "Work", "home" and Flight Mode - they make no sence. BTW. flight mode keeps wifi off for use on planes...!? Work is for network with internet access and home is internet without network (ability to use network share drives) . MS decided that most people don't have networked computers at home so they provided a connection that does not use it. dumb. Oh yeah, and having to look at the modem parameters in the connection menus is most annoying.
