Actually you can, well at least mencoder (mplayer too if you use a console video output driver... but that's useless :) ). However in order to get a good result, a great deal of searching on the net might be necessary. There are many settings when you encode a movie, and if not set correctly can give very bad results. My first attempt (and for the moment, last one too :) ) gave a 700Mo DivX, after 24h (on a 1Ghz, but still that's too much) with an awfull image quality !
Anyway long story short, the app proposed above uses mplayer and (from what I saw on the website) comes with a preconfigured optimal set of options for the encoding, so don't need to bother much.
