That's a bit broad! It's not unreliable, it is just as state of the art as the maps allow. GPS is inherently going to have errors, as maps cannot keep up with changes in roads, political boundaries, new neighborhoods, etc. That said, I find it remarkable that the mapping companies have gotten as accurate as they have. NavTech, the map provider for several packages, have a full staff who are out daily verifying their maps using GPS receivers to verify that the roads are where they think they are. Given that we have almost 4 million miles (6.37 million km) of highways in the US, the idea that we could have a mapping system capable of finding the fastest or shortest distance between any two addresses in that 4 million miles on a handheld computer is phenomenal. And to couple that with a GPS system capable of locating you to within 25 meters in that 4 million miles is a very powerful tool, indeed.

In short, any system that capable is going to have some errors. But NavTech sure doesn't have that many given the compexityof the problem!
