I REALLY like how the start menu displays the recent icons when displayed horizontally. It displays just the icons across the top.

One solution, is to create new folders (like "Multimedia", "Office", "Utilities"), and move all the shortcuts into those folders. Windows won't be able to find-them, so they won't appear as "recently used" apps.
