The cab installer of WirelessPower should assign the applet to the wireless button automatically. Have you tried to re-install? Maybe some registry changes have been lost due to the soft-reset you did.
The cyclic and direct modes only change the way the applet behaves when the wireless button is pressed more than once. In cyclic, you can press it as many times as you want until you have the desired config of bt and wifi. In direct, you press it once to show the applet and then one or two times more to toggle bt or wifi state. I think the best is to try different settings to check which one you like best after you have it working.
