It worked!
The battery that I ordered from
www.pdasmart.com worked great.
They sent it fully assembled with wires and connector. It even had the adhesive on it with a piece of wax paper, so the battery would stay in place once in the Axim X3. The total with shipping was $33. A little high compared to the other posts, but this is the only place I have found that gives you a no-brainer solution.
If you don't want to send your pda back to Dell or construct the battery yourself, this is a great option.
