I think the Media Player is only skinnable in Portrait mode, switch the screen direction to portrait and it should work, as far as I know there is no way to apply a skin in normal mode.

hmm, i tried in portrait and landscape and in normal and true vga modes.. wierd.. tried a few skins too..
