try this if you are running Windows XP

START - RUN - type COMMAND - type IPCONFIG /RENEW

also to check status of the network card
START - RUN - type COMMAND - type IPCONFIG /ALL
This will show the IP settings at the hardware level. Sometimes even though setting via windows xp aren't set. Also try a system restart if it was changed several times.
