There is no "best". All have their ups and downs.

GSPlayer: Fast, lightweight, simple, all necessary functions. Free.

MortPlayer: The swiss pocket knife (though from Germany ;)). Has lots of functions and settings, and very flexible skinning, but sometimes it takes a bit to find the right tool... A useful stand-alone features are favorites and Changer Mode, which allows to switch through playlists and directory contents easyly and automatically (at end of current playlist or shuffle through all favorite contents, in Changer Mode). Free.

PocketPlayer: Not as complex as MortPlayer, but has most required features. Special features are cross-fading or gapless play and a visualizer, and it supports e.g. Audible and WMP format. Shareware.

PocketMusic: Something between GSPlayer and PocketPlayer. Easy to use esp. since the interface is close to WinAmp, not quite as complex as PocketPlayer. Free for basic version, Shareware for some additional formats (like Ogg Vorbis) and some additional features like WinAmp skin support.

TCPMP: Plays almost everything, but the interface is a bit awkward for music. Controls are only available by device buttons or menu entries, no touchscreen buttons (no idea if this changes with 1.0).

The sound quality seems to depend from the source file type (format, encoder, bitrate, ...), music style, and personal preferences. I've read "x sounds much better than y" in almost every combination so far... (Even "MortPlayer sounds better than GSPlayer" and vice versa, though they share the same source for playback routines...)
Simply check it out for your files and taste...
