For folks who are still not able to upgrade even with this excellent guide, there is another way to skin this cat:

I was able to use the boot loader to upgrade a machine that would not upgrade in any other fashion. So if nothing else works this is definitely another option before sending your machine back to Dell (and maybe experiencing the same problem the next time around).
