Make sure you check the Backlight setting for the number of minutes to leave before turning off the backlight. As far as the screen taps causing sounds to be heard... I think you'd need to turn off the sound for Programs, which disables the sounds for notifications, IIRC.

Thanks, that took care of the backlight problem.
Turning off the sound for Events, while leaving it on for Programs and Notifications got rid of the clicking I didn't want, and kept the alarms I need. How stupid is it that tapping
start is an event! And I have no idea what other events I silenced. But the clicking is gone.
