It works!
I finally broke down and called Dell Support. After a series of steps, I mentioned that the cradle was hooked to a USB hub (powered). He said to plug the cradle directly into the USB port. I did, and it worked!
Sorry for posting on the wrong board (and double posting over on Applications).
