They don't reverse-engineer stuff. They tear stuff apart, find out how much parts cost, determine if the manufacturer could be losing money (like Sony on the PS3) sell the reports to competitors so they know how their products compare. It costs alot of money to teardown something. Many companies would rather pay $3K for a report rather than $10K to have their staff do it.
