2/ Don't know the answer to that one, but why not just keep the files in AVI (Divx/Xvid) for laptop playback. Windows Media on the PC with the proper codec can play pretty much any AVI's.

Windows Media can play AVIs?
I just usually burn a copy dvd for travel because I don't want to mess up my originals...plus when I am gone for several weeks I don't have enough storage cards to hold all the movies I want to take.
