Unfriggin believable... I figured I had nothing to lose, so I did a hard reset. Upon restarting, without making any changes, the services listed under my PC (on the X50v) showed activesync.
No idea how, why, or what, but it works. hopefully my little mindless rant will help someone with the same struggle...
