Short answer: yes, I am. When I started testing it, I agreed not to say anything, but Juraj has now given me explicit permission to talk about it. Feel free to ask questions about my experience, but please don't ask for any files.

You asked about how it runs, so I think I will copy directly from MyPDA (and you may want to read from the bottom up for the chronology):

-current operating system: Windows Mobile 5 (ROM A02 beta - installed 12/20/06)

  • [12/26/06]  I've found that this newest version of WM5 presents two advantages for me over WM 2003SE:
    1. If I ever have to soft reset my device, which sometimes happens, the driver for my PalmOne Universal Keyboard automatically enables itself when the OS restarts.  This never happened with WM2003SE, meaning that I'd have to manually enable it on every soft reset.
    2. With WM2003SE, the symbolics plugin for Math Tablet wouldn't work unless I had a completely clean device.  For some reason, it seems that both Pocket Plus and Pocket Breeze interfered with the plugin functionality.  With WM5, I can now use the excellent symbolics available with Math Tablet (plugin written by Bernard Parisse).

  • [12/22/06]  I'm finding that the compaction thread does run every so often (every few hours or so), but it's not terrible, and nothing like my first install of WM5 was.  It only lasts 2-4 minutes, so when it kicks in, I let it run its course.

  • [12/21/2006]  After trying WM5 various time since 12/05 and always reverting back to WM2003SE (I probably had WM5 on my PDA for a grand total of 4 days), I'm now sticking with WM5 because it looks like Dell is finally doing something to make it usable on the x50 series.
    • With the beta version of WM5 that I'm running, I'm no longer having any of the problems I describe below (6 days and running). See below for a list of programs I've got installed, and where they're installed (because system performance may be linked to program location, as has been seen with the IPAQ 4700 series).

[11/18/2005] reverted from A01 back to WM2003SE rev05 because of constant problems listed below (issues with WM5):
    • Sometimes power button doesn't respond (soft reset fixes) - battery heats up and drains quickly. This may be due to to the problem with ActiveSync (see this thread for an explanation), or with the compaction thread always kicking in (see here and here for info)
    • OS frequently 'loses' CF card, and soft reset is only way to get back (all my music disappears ). This is a problem with the update provided from Dell - something is wrong in their IO routines
    • Processor setting='Auto', but speed remains at 624 MHz. When this is an issue, it is because of the compaction thread kicking in. See the links above for more information.
    • Biggest issue(!!!): Dell hasn't given us an update for months now (user Juraj posted that the've got one coming soon, though - see this thread for particulars.)
