Thanks very much for the response - it's been a very frustrating problem for me.

Downloaded G-Spot (very cool little app, by the way!), but unfortunately, it seems to only be able to identify what codecs are in AVI files; won't accept the mp4 file.

However - I asked what the person used to rip the videos:

Video: ~490Kbps -VBR- Nero Digital MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile)
Sound: ~48Kbps -VBR- Nero HE-AAC (Advanced Audio Codec)

Does this tell you anything? Doesn't seem far off from what I've been able to play in the past.
