They are stored in the file pim.vol which is in the root directory of the X51. It also stores your appointments and tasks in that file.
You can back up this file to a storage card without any problems but it is a bit of a juggle to restore it...
To restore (after hard reset or whatever):
1) Move (not delete) the old pim.vol to another directory, \Temp is a good place. This file will continue to be used for contacts information until after a soft reset so you cannot delete it until the backup is in place and you've done a soft reset.
2) Copy the backup to the root directory
3) Soft reset
4) Your backup should now be being used for contacts.
5) Delete the file you moved to the \Temp directory.
