A lot of googling finds little on this problem, which is always a worry. There does seem to be a consensus that it is due to a corrupt file on the PDA or PC.
I have tried uninstall/reinstall of ActiveSync and Outlook all to no avail.
I am fortunate that 2 of us have x51Vs syncing with the same outlook. One has the 0x8503001c problem the other does not.
I therfore knew that the PC Outlook database was OK.
The following got my dead-pda working : write down on a piece of paper/screen shots all the new stuff since your last successful sync with the PC.
Backup your PC's Outlook calendar/tasks/contacts to a/some .pst
Delete all the contacts, tasks and calendar entries on the PDA.
Plug it back in (not quite sure if I had to make a new pairing).
Everything on Outlook was downloaded to the once-dead PDA and both are now syncing fine.
If you've added a lot to your calendar since things stopped working then there is a lot of copying and re-entering to do. Don't wait three months like I did. I guess you could always "beam" it to a friends PDA, have them sync their machine and then email you the contact/calendar entry which will then get into your Outlook and then back to your PDA!!-yuk
We also found that the PC calendar was being put on the PDA but not in the other direction so tried to do any new entries via Outlook for the last few months.

None of this is ideal, but we are up and going again and can see each others stuff. We seem to have lost annaversary dates (which are still in the contact but don't appear in the calendar) but nothing else.
Another lesson is to backup to a .pst the calendar, tasks and contacts from Outlook every month.

Just for info I've been using PocketInformant not PocketOutlook on the PDA. The problem seemed to arise when the other half tried to do something clever with heirachical categories.
