The registry is the overall configuration repository for the Windows operating system. Without that the OS has no way to determine how it is to run or how programs under it are to run. Programs, whether applications or system, are usually .dll or .exe filetypes, so without them the programs cannot run either.

You may not need to backup "Persistent Storage" nor "Memory Cards" (e.g.: CF; SD), depending upon what you are planning to restore. Based on your original post, I would probably recommend backing up persistent storage, but not the memory cards; however, I would backup the memory cards to a PC via a USB card reader periodically.
