What is the purpose of syncing to a server? Can some one tell me (in short words if possible) if they use exchange server to sync and the advantage?

I'm reading on this and thinking about using a server instead of syncing to my laptop.

All of this is new to me so I'm not sure if I'm going in the right direction!!!
