Given that your reader only sees 981MB, and I'm assuming you can't format the card in the reader beyond 981MB, it sounds like a defective unit. My Transcend 4GB SD card was inserted and immediately recognized without any problems, so yours in theory should have as well. Contact Transcend for a replacement.
