Try Super its pretty straight forward and lets you do a few modifications. I like it and its free.

I haven't noticed any significant benefits to using h.264 over Xvid at bitrates of about 900 kbps and the x51v is much more efficient with XviD due to the intel 2700g. what kind of results are you getting at your bitrates.
