As Daniel2006 points out, it's all in the math and difference between bits, bytes, kilobytes, etc. It's not just memory cards, it is the same with hard drives. A kilobyte is not 1,000 bytes (as you might think), it's 1024 bytes and a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, etc. etc.
