What player are you using? TCPMP set the CPU speed down to about 208MHz when playing MP3's, and PocketPlayer 3 runs the CPU at about 312MHz or so if you're not using A2DP. I'd suggest switching MP3 player software and seeing if that fixes your issue - also see what else's running in the background. If you installed the A2DP fix that someone posted on the forums here, all that does is run a program that keeps your CPU at full power (624MHz) to keep A2DP from skipping.

Honestly, I wouldn't say that WMA SAVES CPU cycles - they're smaller, but that also means you spend a bit more time (CPU time) decoding.
