Beyond the fact that all handheld have limited IR distance unless they were designed with the intention to be used as a remote (sony models). Then it all really depends on the device your trying to control.
I've found that early to mid 90's electronics are better at picking up the Axim IR signal. I get about 20 feet from my RCA television Circa 92. Same goes for my VCR. But with the reciever, DVD player, DSS, Tivo. I can barely get 2-3 feet.
