Question Screen Tap Problem - Any Fix?

My Axim x5 400 stopped responding to screen taps on Saturday. Intermitent at first, then couldn't get any response at all , except at the very top right of the screen. Tapping there opens the input method selection box at the bottom right, and sometimes the keyboard itself. But, of course, tapping the keyboard does nothing.

After soft resets didn't help I backed up and performed a hard reset. Then I couldn't get past the 'Align Screen' page! Tap it all around to align and it just jumps back to the start point. I called Dell Tech--very disappointing. Especially since they used to be excellent.

I eventually found several posts about this on the Dell forums. The screen tapping works if you squeeze the sides of the Axim, apparently because the frame flexes over time and allows the screen to separate slightly from the foil beneath it. I didn't realize it was so common. So why does tech support act like you're crazy when you call about this?

I called tech support and spoke with a man who spoke very little English, and that with a heavy accent. After repeating my service tag to him at least six times, he had me hard reset again, with same results. He had me re-align the screen 40 times (I'm not exaggerating - I counted) with same result. He also tried to have me bypass the alignment screen, but I'm not certain I did it correctly as I just could not understand him. He finally said he would have a new (read: refurbished) Axim sent to me, however he kept screwing up my shipping address, so I told him not to send anything and I would call back to try to get a tech who speaks English a little better. But every time I called I kept getting him again! I finally called the next day and got a woman who spoke English a little better. Replacement is on the way.

But....if this is a recurring problem, what's to stop the replacement from doing the same? I never dropped it or anything. I use a Belkin leather flip case with a swivel belt clip.

Would a hard case, like Rhino, help prevent this?

Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Or do I just keep getting replacements when it occurs until my service plan expires?

All advice welcome!!

Thank you,

Jim McGowan
