Just to throw out a different opinion - I find backups of only moderate use.

I've hard reset my PPCs on purpose half a dozen times and, in most cases even though I had a backup, I did not use it. All my PIM data is stored on two PCs (home and work), I use sd memory cards for 99% of my files, and it takes 45min to an hour to do a fresh install of programs (after which the PPC tends to run faster than it does with a restore). Admittedly, this is longer than the 5-10 minutes a restore from many backup applications take but isn't far from what some users have reported in using ActiveSync restore.

The only use I typically make of backups is when I install new programs and decide to revert to the PPC status prior to the install.
