If you don't want to buy the CF card and have the 400Mhz model with the extra storage in ROM you can back up you PIM databse there. The steps are the same as in mtb's message above except select 'built-in' storage instead of backup to CF. The PIM database should fit easily into the unused space. Only problem is when/if a new OS is released that spaced might not be there anymore and then you'd have to find another way. When you store data to the 'built in storage'/ROM you can still get to it after a hard reset or loose all power that would usually clear out your entire RAM. So if you crash out in the field you can do a restore from built-in storage on the scene and get all you PIM info back.
