First, the "best" setting in Mapopolis for the voice volume is the 4th from the left (or 3rd from the right) as agreed upon in numerous threads here (I concur, for what that's worth). Make sure that you are set there.

Then it depends on what you are doing. In the car, an Arkon multimedia mount (see link above) works great - MUCH louder & more clear. Buy.com has it for $40.

Haven't really used the GPS on foot, but I know that the Sony earbuds work great for MP3's, so I would go with that idea.
