Thanks for the replies. I tried a couple of things before some of these were posted. Toothpaste didn't work, although it's helped before in other situations. I had the bright idea to try rubbing compound (for cars). This turned the back of the case a lovely shade of metallic orange. After a great deal of cleaning, the case wound up as before: the original silver, with all the same scratches.
None of the scratches are bad enough to warrant touch-up paint. Most don't show up unless you tilt the case at different angles in the light. So I've resolved to leave well enough alone.
