I think there are some technical misunderstandings here:

1. The Ax is a true USB device, even though it's not very fast.

2. USB 2.0 cables are expensive, not because of their shielding. Because USB 2.0 can go up to 450 mbs, the cables must be impedance-controlled (a little too technical for here. pm me if you really want to know ...) so that reflections won't degrade the signals. At Axim USB speeds, this isn't a problem. You can get away with several hundred feet of twisted pair if you want to build an really long cable. Just don't try to use it for any other USB device!
