The problem must lie in step 3. With the Ax attached, on the desktop open Activesync, Options, click on Calendar to highlight it, then Settings. Now click on the "synchronize only those appointments in the following selected categories" and set the category you want to sync, which should be "No category" and nothing else. Now, any appointment in any category will not be synced. This setting lets you leave most appointments uncategorized and only apply a category to those you don't want to sync to the home pc. I use this all the time to sync what I want and skip what I don't.
