Ted, you can use the GlobalSat BC-307 in your laptop. If you got the Semson kit, it includes a CF to PCMCIA adaptor - you can buy these for a few bucks if you don't have one.

Plug the GPS into the adaptor and plug that into your laptop's PCMCIA slot.
Windows will try to identify the card and it'll show up as a generic CF card.
When the new hardware wizard pops up, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)", and click Next.
Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." and click Next.
In the 'Manufacturer' column (left), select "(Standard port types)" and in the 'Model' column (right) select "Communications Port" then click Next.
You'll get an alert saying that the driver isn't recommended.
Click Yes.
The wizard will then go ahead and install that driver.

Your GPS should show up in the hardware list as COM5 and you can select it in any application as COM5 including terminal apps if you want to see the data stream (set the port properties to 4800,8,N,1,No handshake)

Hope this helps.
