Actually, on the installer page I saw - it clearly says NOT to use the Backup and Restore features - but to backup and restore MANUALLY by copying the files either onto a storage card using file File Explorer, or using the Explore mode in ActiveSync. They don't even recommend backing up your databases - suggesting that you sync first, then force a restore sync copying data from Outlook back to the PDA.

The version I saw was fairly recent.

I suspect that basic formats like the Backup file format has changed from 2002 to 2003. Then again, so many weird things have happened during this transition that I have NO idea anymore. :)
